Why is it SO HARD to Lose Weight?

By Inside Out Nutrition / September 24, 2018

Do you think releasing weight is hard? I know I have but lately I’ve been questioning this. If it shouldn’t be that hard, where are we going wrong? If you love to read, keep scrolling down and read on but if watching videos is more your style, click play below now.

Have you ever thought, it shouldn’t be this hard? Weight loss shouldn’t be this hard! It’s not fair! Why is it SO HARD? I know I have!

I don’t think it should be that hard. Yes, it’s hard work but I’m really happy with where I am with my diet and lifestyle at the moment. I can see myself continuing on with what I am doing for the rest of my life.

That’s the thing with “diets” right. You want to lose weight so you go on a diet. You restrict what you eat and start to lose weight. But “diets” generally aren’t sustainable long term.

So after a while life starts to get in the way and the diet you’re on gets too hard so you stop following it. You go back to the way you used to eat and end up gaining the weight back and sometimes even more. Then you blame yourself for not having enough will power and that you failed, yet again at another diet.

But what if it’s not your fault?

Have you ever taken the time to think that maybe it’s actually the diets fault, not yours. Really, the diet has failed you! The diet wasn’t sustainable long term and you really had no chance of success. Diet is such a tricky word right. People go on “diets” but diet can also mean a way of eating.

I currently enjoy following the Low Carb, Healthy Fat (LCHF) diet. It’s not a “diet”, but a way of eating that I can see myself doing for the rest of my life. My diet consists of mostly vegetables with a portion of protein and healthy fats in every meal. I also enjoy nuts and seeds, fruit and dark chocolate and this way of eating feels really good to me. I feel satiated and know I’m eating a variety of nutrients.

So, I’m happy with my diet and I’m also in a really good place with being active in my life. I love to go walking and cycling and I do this for fun and to get outside in nature and improve my fitness.

So what about the dreaded weight loss plateau?

I’ve been stuck in a weight loss plateau for a long time now and tried a few different things to get through it but I haven’t had any long term success. So, I’ve been asking myself this question, why is it so hard and the universe has given me a hint. Emotional Eating.

While listening to one of my favourite podcasts, The Lively Show, I heard Jess, the host interview a lady named Brooke Castillo and she said weight loss was her jam. So, I headed over to Brooke’s podcast to check her out. I instantly fell in love with her work, everything she was teaching and I really resonated with Brooke. One thing she said that really hit home with me was this.

“Weight loss is easy when you don’t overeat. To stop overeating is easy. You just don’t put the food in your mouth and eat it. The hard part is the discomfort you feel when you don’t get to eat what you want.”

Brooke Castillo

Talk about a truth bomb! I knew she was right and I finally saw a glimmer of hope to get past my current weight loss plateau. It was time to start a new chapter in my weight release journey. Brooke runs The Life Coach School and has an online self coaching program called Self Coaching Scholars. I signed up and gained access to her Stop Overeating program.

I’m super excited about what I’m going to learn working through this program and I’m going to share it all here in my blog. I’m really glad I have you guys to hold me accountable and share my progress with and I really hope you join me on the journey of uncovering why you personally overeat so you too can get to and maintain your ideal body weight.

So what is Emotional Eating?

Now you might be wondering what Emotional Eating is and do you overeat? Basically, it’s whenever you eat when you’re not physically hungry. We often eat because we’re bored, out socialising, procrastinating, to feel better or to numb our feelings of sadness or frustration. These are all forms of Emotional Eating and can be seen as over eating because we’re generally not physically hungry when we eat during these moments.

It’s not food we need. We need to process our EMOTIONS! This isn’t something we’re really taught to do as children but it’s never too late to learn new skills right?

Emotions are just feelings in our bodies that tend to be uncomfortable so it’s time to start learning how to feel my emotions. The first step in my plan is to start being more aware of when I eat and how I’m feeling. Some questions I going to start asking myself are:

Am I hungry?

What am I thinking about when I choose to eat?

How am I feeling when I eat?

Check out my next blog How to use the Hunger Scale to eat Intuitively to learn the answers to these questions. I also talk about our hunger hormones and explain the difference between physical hunger and emotional hunger.

Now I want to hear from you. Do you think you overeat? Are you going to join me in becoming more aware of when you eat and ask yourself similar questions? Have you also experienced emotional eating like I have? Can you relate to what I’ve shared?

If so, please leave a comment below. Share with me how you felt about going through this and how you overcame it. The more we talk about our struggles and wins with each other, the more support we feel. This also helps us all to achieve our health goals.
